The Count of Monte Cristo
Set in France, The Count of Monte Cristo grapples with difficult questions. Wronged by his friends, betrayed by his love, and outcast from the world, Edmond Dantes contemplates the true meaning of justice while imprisoned for fourteen years for a crime he did not commit. He vows to get revenge, rewarding the good and punishing the wicked, but realizes that true justice lies in the hands of God. This hero finds that time is the best form of justice; people need to acknowledge their limitations; revenge can be bittersweet; and true justice cannot be achieved by taking justice into one’s own hands.
