Description:
This National Book Award winner, set during the last battle of the Civil War in Petersburg, is the odyssey of a deserter from the Confederate army to his home on Cold Mountain and his reunion with his beloved. It is a tale of survival against the hostile forces of nature and governments with allusions to Emerson, Thoreau, Darwin, and Eastern philosophy. It is also a story of psychological and emotional integrity. Students will be intrigued by the social customs and taboos of the era. They will ponder the meanings of love, loyalty, life, self-actualization, and spirituality. They will also appreciate the craftsmanship of language, character, and structure that developed an odd little family story into a book that alludes to eastern mysticism and transcendentalism and that many critics compare to Homer’s Odyssey.
