Description:

Set in fifth-century Britain, The Crystal Cave is told in first person by Merlin, the legendary wizard. As an old man, he recalls his childhood and young manhood as he prepares for the birth of Arthur. The first of four books in the series, the novel chronicles the events leading up to Arthur’s birth but does not actually feature the character of Arthur.

Part of Arthurian legend, Merlin seeks the purpose in his life and discovers his destined role as confidante and wizard to the British kings. Merlin’s journey to discovering his destiny illustrates the themes of unity, order, justice, peace, duty, honor, loyalty, and wisdom.

Activities:

Students study the setting of the Arthurian legend, using maps; examine the structure of the novel’s five books as compared to the structure of epic novels; analyze and connect the details that lead Merlin to understand how the stages of his journey prepare him to fulfill his destiny and to create one country and one king; write about motif and theme. Students read, question, conduct small- and large-group discussions, evaluate, map, chart, research, write, brainstorm, and interview.

Supplementary materials include a character quiz, objective test, essay test, answer key, and information on the legend in film. The unit also features a study guide.
