Jane Austen’s Emma has delighted two centuries of readers with its comic portraits of the timeless pursuit of courtship and marriage. These lessons stress her ironic perspective on domestic life in the English village of Highbury around 1800. The novel emphasizes the importance of self-knowledge, honest communication, and kindness. Courtship in the upper middle class is depicted. Emma, a would-be matchmaker, attempts to match her new friend, Harriet Smith, to Mr. Elton who, it turns out, has been pursuing Emma. After a series of mismatches, it is Emma who discovers her own real love.
