Description:

In California in the late twentieth century, several students develop a friendship while organizing an elaborate game. This is a coming-of-age narrative in which the main character leaves childhood behind after facing a situation that requires taking responsible action. The main character, April, accepts the fact that she will not be able to live with her mother and must live with her grandmother. She also learns that despite feeling inferior because of this situation, she has much to offer her new school friends. Together they devise a well-developed simulation of various aspects of life in ancient Egypt.

Activities:

Students keep a reading journal, analyze characters and plot, write essays, explore ancient Egyptian culture, and study hieroglyphics. They also create a want ad, complete word puzzles, design a T-shirt, and create cartouches.

Lessons include study guide questions with suggested responses. Supplementary materials include an objective test with answer key.
