This novel presents a fictionalized account of the true story of the Lost Woman of San Nicolas. A young Native American girl, Karana, is left on an isolated island off the coast of California. She manages to survive alone for eighteen years. As she adjusts to her isolation, she changes from a fearful, vengeful child into a serene, compassionate adult. The story shows the growth of the human spirit in the face of adversity and the influence of period, place, and circumstances in shaping characters’ lives.

Students analyze literary elements such as setting, point of view, external and internal conflict, theme, and symbols.
