Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

This nineteenth-century novel portrays the effects of exposure to the prison atmosphere: both physical and emotional ones. Magwitch is haunted by his exposure to the penal prison atmosphere. Estella and Miss Havisham are imprisoned by their past experiences. Mr. Jaggers constantly washes his hands to rid himself of the contamination by the criminals he aids. The storyline emphasizes the need for friendship and the consequences of revenge. In a time period when peer pressure is easily understood, students who read Great Expectations are able to sympathize with Pip’s desire to fit in. Just as Pip searches his values as he matures, readers may examine their own responses. This novel is suitable for a variety of ages because of its unforgettable characters, complex thought, and universal themes.
