A political and philosophical novel of persecution set in Kiev, Russia, in 1911, The Fixer elevates an historical account of a child’s murder to the metaphysical realm. The novel deals less with culture and more with the possibility of human redemption and regeneration through change and enormous struggle, a moral victory laced with irony.

Students explore metaphorical structure, study literary craftsmanship, write critically and creatively, enhance vocabulary, and evaluate characters and symbols. They also conduct research, view The Fixer as an existentialist novel, role-play, and stage a follow-up jury trial.
