Description:
The sequel to Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, this novel continues the story of the Logan family with emphasis upon the justice system in the South. In addition to the injustices of the Mississippi court system, this novel presents the struggle for blacks to receive full enfranchisement. Basic civil liberties were controlled by Jim Crow statutes, a reality encountered by Cassie’s discovery that blacks were forbidden the use of public facilities. Woven into the plot are the economic problems of the Depression of the 1930s. Attention is given to the programs instituted to remedy the hardships of unemployment and how racial division hindered improvements for the farm worker.
Activities:
Students conduct research/exploration of the historical background in the novel. They participate in role playing, written and oral presentations, creative writing, vocabulary study, trial simulation, improvised dialogue, and character comparison/contrast.
