An epic novel of the 1917 Russian revolution and consequent civil war, Dr. Zhivago focuses on character and the ordinary lives of people swept into the maelstrom of war, violence, destruction, and survival. In the life and loves of Dr. Yurii Zhivago, Pasternak crystallizes what it means to live through the terror, uprooting, separation from loved ones, wanton destruction, atrocities of civil war, and the disillusionment of the idealistic. Zhivago struggled to preserve life as a doctor, lover, husband, and writer who enshrined life in his poems.

Activities:

Students focus on characters, themes, and images as they link people and events in the narrative. They also analyze the episodic structure and study the lyrical, poetic, epic, and narrative style of the novel. Geography and history are emphasized, as students compare the historical and contemporary Russian scene. Researching, reporting, oral reading, and writing are also stressed.
