Description:
This novel is set in a contemporary, fictional, middle-class suburb of Washington, D.C. The protagonist, idealistic and teenaged Kelly, learns about herself and the human condition by reaching out to others. She meets a homeless Vietnam veteran and explores the topics of the homeless, the Vietnam War, and self-discovery by attempting to help him. In the process, she becomes closer to her father, who is also a veteran; challenges the complacency and materialism of suburban life; and examines her values.
Activities:
Students review the historical elements of the Vietnam War, compare generations, and research current issues using primary sources. They also identify and analyze characters, recognize literary allusions, determine the relevance of setting to the story, and interpret poetry.
