Description:

Published in 1982, Anne Tyler’s ninth novel, Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, introduces the Tull family and manipulates point of view and time so that the reader gains the perspective of each family member over a thirty-five-year period. The novel’s portrayal of a dysfunctional family demonstrates the importance of parenting skills and open communication. It also analyzes the harmful effects of sibling rivalry. Family, often the haven for those in need, becomes the source of suffering. However, all is not lost. The restaurant can function as that haven for those who are “homesick.” Ultimately, Tyler shows us the path to endurance.

Activities:

Lessons address character, theme, point of view, dialogue, irony, comedy, and symbolism. Students study the chapter titles and chapter endings, practice reading and writing for the AP exam, read a Robert Frost poem in order to compare it to the novel, and discuss whether Pearl, the mother, is a poor mother in every way, or if mitigating circumstances affect our perspective. They also engage in small group work, large group discussions, role playing, interviewing, applying material from another discipline, evaluating reviews of the novel, writing an original review, and relating the novel to life.

Supplementary materials include a reading quiz, corresponding answer key, and essay topics.
