Description:

Supplement Advanced Placement and honors curriculum with this introduction to archetypal figures and patterns. Students develop an understanding of symbols, examine archetypes in world literature, poetry, myth, and their own life experience, and analyze the pattern of initiation. Using Carl Jung’s theories and the concepts of sign and symbol, lessons strengthen students’ critical thinking skills, exercise their imaginations, and develop their creative writing abilities.

Activities:

Students identify and interpret classic archetypes such as the Benevolent Guide, the Sacred Marriage, the Trickster, and the Scapegoat. They explore the meanings of myths and relate myths to life experiences through a variety of projects and essay questions. Supplementary materials feature additional activity and project ideas and suggest timed-essay topics.
