All Quiet on the Western Front is the record of seven former schoolboys who are representative of a generation destroyed by the fighting of World War I. Paul Baumer, a sensitive young man who is a member of this group, narrates the story. Paul, a nineteen-year-old German soldier, is sent to fight along the Western Front. It is from this vantage point that he tells the story. He stresses the futility of war, the value of life, and the strength of friendship.
