The Egypt Game/The Bronze Bow by Zilpha Keatley Snyder/Elizabeth George Speare

In California in the late twentieth century, several students develop a friendship while organizing an elaborate game. The Egypt Game is a coming-of-age narrative in which the main character leaves childhood behind after facing a situation that requires taking responsible action. The main character, April, accepts the fact that she will not be able to live with her mother and must live with her grandmother. She also learns that despite feeling inferior because of this situation, she has much to offer her new school friends. Together they devise a well-developed simulation of various aspects of life in ancient Egypt.

In the first century C.E., a young man in Palestine must accept the responsibility of caring for his mentally ill sister and overcome a strong hatred of the Roman occupiers of his country. In The Bronze Bow,the main character, Daniel, develops from a runaway apprentice blacksmith—determined to help the Zealots drive out the hated Romans—to a more mature person returning home to loved ones.
