The Age of Imperialism: 1895-1930
The Age of Imperialism: 1895-1930 details the many aspects of change and growth that occurred between the Spanish-American War and the Great Depression, specifically dealing with the concept of imperialism. Topics addressed include industrial progress, leisure activities, innovations in transportation, and world events.

The trade books for the Upper Elementary portion of the unit are Kids at WorkâLewis Hine and the Crusade Against Child Labor; Bully for You, Teddy Roosevelt; Culebra Cut; and Clash with the Newsboys. The unit does not include the actual children's literature books.

Student Activities
Classroom activities include creating designs for transportation of the future, recording a short radio spot, producing a silent film, and participating in role-playing scenarios about the railroad industry and working on an automobile assembly line. Students also compare their daily routines to that of a child laborer, review the events that triggered World War I, and research muckrakers and reformers. Although activities are organized into primary and upper elementary sections, many assignments can be adapted to suit either age group.
