Description:

U.S. History, Book 1: Beginnings to 1876, is designed for use in eighth grade classrooms. The goal of the lessons is to teach factual data as well as the process of history that is important for understanding our nation’s past.

Five parts deal with exploration and colonization from the prehistoric era through the early eighteenth century; issues in the formation of the United States as an independent country; the expansion of U.S. boundaries to the Pacific; the Civil War; and America after the Civil War. Lessons include The Missions of Spanish California, The Making of the Constitution: A Role-Play, Literary Trends: 1830–1860, Slave Life in the Old South, and America’s Centennial.

Help your students develop reading skills--while strengthening their core knowledge--by using literature in the classroom. Use Center for Learning novel/drama units to enhance instruction in U.S. history.

See our Novel/Drama section for additional titles.

Activities:

To complete the activities for each lesson, students use a variety of resources, including maps, charts, cartoons, illustrations, and primary sources. Materials develop higher-level thinking skills as well as reinforce cognitive skills. Role-play, games, and small group discussion encourage student interest and involvement.
