Description:

U.S. History, Book 2: 1876 to Present, is designed for use in eighth grade classrooms. The goal of the lessons is to teach factual data as well as the process of history that is important for understanding our nation’s past.

The unit is divided into six sections. Part 1 deals with the American West—specifically with the closing of the frontier. Part 2 focuses on the celebration and reforms in a nation of growing industrial power. Part 3 emphasizes America as a world power in territorial acquisition, war involvement, and treaty leadership. In Part 4, students study major political, industrial, and social events between World War I and World War II. Part 5 considers the problems and struggles between nations of different political philosophies—specifically between the Soviet Union and the United States. Part 6 deals with the social and technological revolution in the United States affecting every strata of the American dream. The last lesson prompts a look toward the future. Lessons include From the Bitterroots to Wounded Knee: The Last Indian Wars, The Muckrakers: Writing for Reform, The Annexation of Hawaii, Early Advertising and the American Automobile, The Space Race and the Cold War, and Television and American Elections.

Help your students develop reading skills--while strengthening their core knowledge--by using literature in the classroom. Use Center for Learning novel/drama units to enhance instruction in U.S. history.

See our Novel/Drama section for additional titles.
