Description:

Primo Levi’s approach in Survival in Auschwitz is unique. As a chemist, Levi uses an analytical thought process to examine the mind of the perpetrator and the victim, to distinguish between good and evil, and to draw the reader into his world of Auschwitz. Instead of sharing an experience of horrors, Levi attempts to examine the intricacies of the human mind in such circumstances.

This unit focuses on the historical context of the Holocaust and an examination of Levi’s use of language to imprint images of Auschwitz on the reader’s mind. The story makes readers aware of the dangers of apathy and their own responsibility in the face of human cruelty. Students need to understand that the Holocaust did not occur overnight with the death of six million people. The hatred and prejudice that resulted in the horrors of the Holocaust make it imperative to study writers, such as Levi, who examine human behavior and its effect on others.

Activities:

This unit addresses irony, figurative language, and the precision of vocabulary. Students write a variety of pieces including a descriptive paper, an expository paper, poetry, journal entries, and a research report. Students analyze euphemistic vocabulary, poetry, and detailed passages from the text. They also prepare a character profile and an oral report.

Additional features of this unit include a study guide, a book review assignment, and a unit test and answer key.
