Description:
A vivid picture of pioneer life in post–Civil War Nebraska, My Antonia allows readers to experience the hardships and joys of growing up on the prairie. Readers can understand why the young person must leave for experiences in the wider world but later return to the replenishment and peace only the land can give. Willa Cather blends folklore, autobiographical detail, and fictional characterization to create a regional novel. She stresses daily cycles of calm and tension, as well as ethnic tensions.

Activities:

Students study characters, their values, and consequences of their choices; make characters’ situations come alive through oral reports, song and poem writing, and role playing; and analyze sensory images, dialogue, themes, and narrator’s viewpoint. They also research historical elements of the novel and examine their personal ancestral backgrounds.

Supplemental activities include study and discussion guides, an identification quiz, and an essay test, with answer keys for each.
