Description:
The South has produced great writers, and many of them are featured in this anthology of 33 stories written between 1829 and 1973. Stories from Flannery O’Connor, Eudora Welty, Zora Neale Hurston, William Faulkner, Robert Penn Warren, Richard Wright, Zora Neale Hurston, Kate Chopin, Edgar Allan Poe, and others are rich in Southern dialect, irony, and symbolism, as well as the South’s fascination with the supernatural and religion. These stories can be studied for their literary merit, but they may also be discussed for their relevance to readers’ lives. Universal themes abound, including loyalty and responsibility, family traditions, and male-female relationships. Lessons group stories by theme and literary elements. Note: Videos are available for some of the stories in the collection.

Activities:
Students study themes with a focus on symbols, color, and parallel plots; formulate solutions for hypothetical situations similar to those in the stories; compare and contrast holidays of different cultures; and analyze the relationship of themes to personal lives of readers. They also examine allusions, think critically, draw analogies, conduct research, and write essays. Each lesson features an assessment.
