A social commentary about the South in the late 1950s, A Different Drummer is the story of a descendant of a slave who destroys his home and land before leaving town. His departure prompts other African Americans to leave the state. The novel is a study of black and white conflict, education vs. primitivism, freedom, isolation, and leadership.
