It also presents a geographer’s view of American history; a discussion of map conventions, map making, and the many types of maps; an examination of special uses of maps (in warfare, treasure hunting, and politics); and a probe into aerial and satellite maps as well as maps of planets other than Earth. Interspersed throughout are directions for such activities as a compass navigation game, measuring the elevation of a hill, surveying a plot of land, drawing a map to scale, and engraving a map (using aluminum foil).
