GRADE 11: Developing Core Literary Proficiencies

Students practice close reading of sources about the Civil War, including archival photos, a Ken Burns video, a PBS website, Sullivan Ballou’s letter, and selections from Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jefferson Davis, and Harriet Jacobs; study W.E.B. Du Bois’s The Souls of Black Folk to learn how to make text-based claims; analyze and assess literary technique in Louis Erdich’s "The Red Convertible" and Tim O’Brien’s "On the Rainy River"; conduct research on how our decisions about what we eat affect the world; and construct an argument on what makes the legal punishment a person receives for a crime necessary, effective, and ethical.
