LOOKING AT LITERATURE WITH A BEAT

Expand the study of poetry to include different learning styles by using these innovative lessons that pair ten poems from ten different American authors and eras with accompanying songs that either directly refer to a specific poem or convey a theme that is similar to the poem. For example, Robert Frost’s "The Road Not Taken" is paired with George Harrison’s "Any Road," and Nikki Giovanni’s "Choices" is paired with Taylor Swift’s "Change." Built on well-grounded research regarding the benefits of using music in the classroom, the exercises and activities elicit responses about tone, mood, diction, and theme. Included in each unit are short biographies of the poet and songwriter, background information about the poem and song, close-reading exercises about the poem or lyrics, and a section that requires action such as discussion, research, or writing.
