Edited and with an introduction by John Russell Brown. The 35 “duets” in this anthology of scenes from Shakespeare were chosen because they can be performed independent of their respective plays and require little space and few props. A brief description of the characters and situation and a commentary on special acting challenges and opportunities precedes each scene. Fifteen scenes are for one male/one female, while ten each are provided for two females and two males respectively. There are also supplementary notes on meanings, topical references, and puns. The editor, a former associate director of the National Theatre of Great Britain, gives practical advice to novice actors in the introduction. Applause. 290 pages.
