Increase students' reading comprehension while preparing them for the increasingly common document-based question.
An initial unit acquaints students with the various forms that primary (and secondary) sources may take. Subsequent units build skills in factual and critical analysis of primary source documents (such as letters, journals, photos, speeches, newspaper articles, and political cartoons), before offering an introductory DBQ. The final unit gives students six practice DBQs on subjects from ancient Egypt to the Berlin Wall. Additional handouts serve as checksheets for analyzing texts, maps, photos, and cartoons. A rubric and sample top essay aid in assessment.
