A slice-of-life look into a typical day for ordinary people in ancient Rome reveals how the city was a diverse society of interlocked communities with a dynamic attitude.
In every hour, a different person is introduced-citizens of all ages and strata of society, from emperor to slave girl, gladiator to astrologer, medicine woman to water-clock maker, baker to priestess. While the characters are mostly fictional, their lives are not, and when considered together they offer a multilayered picture of the social fabric of the city. Sources include contributions from archaeologists, sociologists, epigraphists and a host of other disciplines along with actual anecdotes, jokes, speeches, and correspondence of the people who lived there.
