ACTION NEWS

This kit is designed to develop writing and thinking skills while familiarizing students with how television news stories are assembled. Four groups of reproducible activities are provided. “TV News Mini-Text,” on a set of four masters, has students consider dilemmas of journalistic ethics. A four-page “Action News Workbook” offers guidelines on evaluating TV news broadcasts. Two games conclude the set: a five-page “Gatekeeper Game” has students play the roles of editors deciding which stories to carry and which to cut; and a four-page “Big Story Game” asks students to write news stories based on information in a set of fact sheets.
