Encouraging discussion and investigation, this 30-lesson unit covers fiction, poetry, and drama as it develops students’ abilities to analyze significant literary pieces and write effectively. Students begin by analyzing short stories from Nathaniel Hawthorne and others, moving onto full-length novels before illustrating the ways in which poems are similar to prose through work by Shakespeare, Whitman, and others. The drama component draws student attention to its history, theatrical devices, and aesthetics.
