AMERICAN LITERATURE 3

Showcases works of great artistic merit and gives students the tools to evaluate such merit through the author’s use of literary elements such as imagery, symbols, and themes. The unit opens with Mark Twain—author of arguably the original great American novel—but goes on to supply a plethora of minority perspectives such as those found in feminist literature, in Native American oratory, and the works of the Harlem Renaissance. Poetry represents a large section of this unit, including the work of Paul Laurence Dunbar, Robert Frost, Carl Sandburg, Langston Hughes, T.S. Eliot, and others.
