An updated version of Herman Melville’s novella, “Bartleby the Scrivener,” provides a scathing account of modern life. A meek accountant who hunches over like a human question-mark, Bartleby disrupts the workplace by politely refusing to do his job. “I prefer not to” is his response which frustrates his well-meaning boss, causes chaos in the office, and earns him the distrust and hate of his coworkers.
