Working as individuals and in “Powerpods,” they research, analyze information, and present and defend their positions. Activities include mapping the world’s petroleum reserves and consumption, racing major transportation routes, and developing solutions for cleaning up a disastrous oil spill. In the final challenge, students buy and sell crude oil in the classroom commodity market. The teacher’s guide contains procedures, handout masters, extensions, and assessments; student guides include a background information and instructions. The full simulation runs for 15 class periods, though sections may be shortened; some activities may stand alone.
