The main part of the map shows the outline of the Byzantine Empire in 565, lands lost from 565–1025, lands lost from 1025–1360, the extent of the empire in 1360, invasion routes, cultural groups, and the plague outbreak in 540. An inset shows the split of Rome into the Eastern and Western Empires in 395. The map also includes a timeline that shows the different groups of invaders.
