Student groups produce maps of deserts, "grow" potted cacti, write a story in petroglyphs, and stage a culminating classroom campout, among other activities involving various attributes of deserts.
Successive lessons look at climate, plant life, geology, reptiles and other fauna, and Native American inhabitants. The 35-page teacher’s guide provides complete procedures, handout masters, extension activities, and assessments; the 34" x 22" map helps students trace their trip. The entire simulation runs for 12 class periods, but nearly every activity can stand alone.
