After researching eight issues concerning immigration (e.g., causes, emotional effects, conflicts with other ethnic groups), students role-play processors and new arrivals at Ellis Island and reflect upon their experiences through writing exercises.
Optional, stand-alone enhancement activities include composing letters to “Old World” family members, holding a class debate on quota systems, conducting a congressional hearing on immigration policy, and interviewing one’s forebears about the “American Dream.” The teacher’s guide supplies procedures, handouts, and documents used in the simulation and for debriefing. The Ellis Island segment runs for five class periods; optional activities take only as long as desired.
