GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN

James Baldwin’s semiautobiographical novel of a black family in Depression-era Harlem (with flashbacks to the rural South) is dramatized in this PBS American Playhouse program. Marked by superb acting and film-style production, the story centers on 14-year-old John Grimes, an aspiring writer. The boy struggles to earn approval from his unrelenting, self-righteous stepfather and to resist social forces that would drag him down. Among the cast members are Paul Winfield, Alfre Woodard, Rosalind Cash, James Bond III, and Ruby Dee. Grades 9 and up. Color. 100 minutes.
