As Native American youths of long ago, according to tribal custom, students begin a one-moon solitary wilderness survival trip, during which they strive to journey from youth to adulthood.
Students will listen to their tribal chief (their teacher) dramatically retell three tribal legends on industry, truth, and courage; remember the legends while completing three naming challenges (The Naming Story, Food Acquisition, and Shelter Construction); record their experiences in a daily log using picture language; return to the village and share their logs with village elders to see if they will be accepted as tribal adults; and participate in a final debriefing. Time: Approximately 10 hours.
