LET’S INVESTIGATE! PLANE GEOMETRY

Instead of feeding students geometric concepts, allow them to discover these same concepts for themselves. Choosing among 22 brain teasers and other challenges (requiring a variety of skills that need not build on each other), young mathematicians decide what investigative strategies to use, how to record their procedures and results, and how to communicate their findings to their teacher and classmates. They sign contracts—working independently or in teams—and analyze, evaluate, and apply the information they gather and insights they achieve. Assessment rubrics and reproducible handouts ease instruction. Meets Common Core standards. Time required: three weeks if all students perform all tasks. Grades 3–7. Interact. ©2012.
