A “school-based enterprise” has developed, produced, and marketed a low-calorie avocado. The SBE team analyzes data on sales, revenue, cost, and profit to help them secure capital to fund research and development for a pesticide. At first a monopoly with a patent on the pesticide, the SBE is bought out, which leads to a debate on the place of monopolies in a free market. Topics include demand, barrier to entry, profit, supply, scarcity, tradeoff, and opportunity cost.
