NARRATIVE STRUCTURES

Reminding viewers that narratives come in three acts-beginning, middle, and end-the program offers humorous scenes (think Monty Python) to show how writers construct a story at each stage with conventions of character, setting, theme, perspective, and causality. As a constable questions a woman about her missing husband, for example, students pick up on psychological insights and character detail. They see how the middle of a story adds complications while the third act, like the punch line in a joke, brings the payoff. Grades 7–12. Color. 24 minutes. Clearvue/eav. ©2002.
