The book is richly illustrated with approximately 30 captioned illustrations (most in color) consisting of paintings, historical prints, artifacts, and maps. The authors, experts in archaeology and state history, draw extensively on primary sources to forgo myths and portray people and events as they really were. The book is divided into short chapters with subheads. Spanish terms are italicized, then translated into English. Topics: "Being part of the Franciscan order was a lot like being in an army." What was the Franciscan order, and what was it like to start and run a mission? How and why did the California mission system end?
