Divided into occupational and regional interest groups, students first play the bull market of the Twenties and must respond to the financial effects of Black Thursday; they also act as lobbyists, senators, and political party members to conduct congressional committee hearings on proposed New Deal legislation.
Possible stand-alone activities include interviewing someone who lived through the Depression, and holding a Hoover-Roosevelt debate. The teacher’s guide provides procedures, assessments, handouts, and background information, while the student guide explains stock market intricacies and outlines roles for the committee hearings. The simulation’s two phases can be run independently and take from six to nine class periods each, depending on depth.
