Based on PBS television's Prayer in America, this program explores the role of religion in American history and society—and the relationship between religion and government—a diverse selection of spokespersons discusses how religious traditions have influenced social movements.
America’s prayer practices are so diverse and multicultural that they may at times, like religions themselves, divide as well as unite. In America, prayer is also both public and private. Public prayer is often more common in times of stress or disaster. The American prayer ideal, if not always the reality, has been to accept all forms, to unite rather than divide, and to promote freedom of worship.
