POETRY 1-2-3

Working in cooperative groups for peer motivation, feedback, and support, students learn about types of poetry, poetic devices, and metrical patterns while writing their own works and developing their own creative voices. Lessons focus on such concepts as alliteration, personification, rhythm and rhyme schemes, and syllabics and acrostics. Culminating activities include assembling a class anthology and shooting a video presentation of favorite poems. The teacher’s guide includes complete procedures and handout masters for 12 lessons. As written, the unit runs for 12 class periods, though individual lessons may be easily dropped and may stand alone. Grades 4–7. Interact.
