Students devise contracts with the teacher for independent-study projects centered on particular genres of children's literature, agreeing upon which tasks to incorporate from dozens of vocabulary, comprehension, writing, art, and "challenge" activities.
For instance, fantasy genre, a student might construct a crossword, vividly describe the book’s setting, write an original myth, build a house for a gnome, or compare fairy tales from different countries. Topics include mysteries, fantasy, animal stories, biographies/autobiographies; science fiction, sports, drama, and realistic fiction. The teacher’s guide contains procedures, recommended reading, answer keys, handout masters, and bibliographies, while the student guide furnishes procedures, suggestions, and sample activities. Due to the individualized nature of the projects, class time varies widely; nearly every project may stand alone.
