An in-depth interview with a Shakespearean expert provides the framework for understanding the range of themes in Shakespeare’s most widely read plays. Scenes from Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, and Julius Caesar are discussed and compared to modern literary works with similar themes—including Lord of the Flies, The Outsiders, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, and Animal Farm—to encourage students to penetrate the complex Elizabethan vocabulary and recognize the universal themes of alienation, love, ambition, and the nature of evil in Shakespeare’s work. Grades 7–12. Color. 46 minutes. Center for the Humanities.
