Using the restoration of the Globe as a door into the world of Elizabethan theater, this program first investigates what the building’s restorers learn as 17th-century architectural demands overturn their 20th-century expectations. Then it records what a troupe of youthful American actors from the Shakespeare Program of the University of California, Berkeley, learn about differences between modern and Elizabethan staging techniques as they rehearse and perform the historically important first Globe production of Much Ado About Nothing. The video also includes a re-creation of an innyard performance and a visit to Suffolk Cathedral, where the stained glass windows depict scenes from Shakespeare’s plays. Color. 30 minutes. UC Regents. ©1997.
