Daniel Day-Lewis and Winona Ryder star in Arthur Miller’s allegory about the Salem witch trials of the 1600’s. A girl tries to win back the man she loves through magic. However, it goes horribly wrong, then turns into lies and vindictiveness, and finally results in the moral destruction of the community itself. Adapted by the playwright and shot near the actual site in Massachusetts, this 1996 film also portrays the heroism of a man who learns what it means to stand by the one you love and to stand up for your principles. Also stars Paul Scofield, Joan Allen, and Jeffrey Jones. Note: brief nudity. Color. 123 minutes. 20th Century-Fox.
