This program weaves together archaeological artifacts, computer-enhanced maps, artwork, location footage and gracefully poetic and informative narration to chart political developments, cultural advances, and scientific achievements. Based on the Hammond Concise Atlas of World History, the program parallels events of the past and present, showing how echoes of ancient civilizations speak to us through the centuries.
This episode looks at how, in Europe, the idealism of the age dies in the carnage of World War I, and in America, the dreamy optimism of the 1920s shatters with the nightmare of the Great Depression. It also also outlines the Russian Revolution and the pervasive influences of Fascism on the politics and culture of Italy and Germany.
